Rebecca has been trying to process the suicide of her older brother Dennis since he jumped off a bridge two years earlier at the age of 17. Her parents, on the other hand, are more concerned with maintaining good outward appearances. Although it could never be established, they place the blame of Dennis's death on his friend Vincent, who was with him at the time. When Vincent shows up in the village again, Rebecca seeks him out to learn more about her brother. She also finds herself attracted to him, but his behaviour is as mercurial as it is hot-blooded. Through Vincent, Rebecca delves deeper and deeper into her brother's secrets – and comes to realise that there was more than just a "friendship" between the two youths. As her parents ignore everything and prepare a big party for her 18th birthday, Rebecca has to make a decision that will reverberate throughout the rest of her life.
