KAFKAFEST

It’s been a hundred years since his death, but it seems Franz Kafka is still in his renaissance era; from cockroach memes about the endless drudgery of uni life, to Gen Z being crowned the loneliest living generation, contemporary life seems to be as kafkaesque as it ever was. So in commemoration of the happy days ahead, and to celebrate the coolest depressing dude ever, we’ve brought you a couple of our favourite film adaptations of his works and the best of classic kafkaesque cinema.

This programme is co-presented with The Projector.

The Trial

Unassuming bureaucrat Josef K. wakes up one morning to find the police in his room. They inform him he’s under arrest and to be put on trial, only, they refuse to tell him what the charge and his crime are. This masterpiece by Orson Welles is based on the 1925 posthumously published novel by Franz Kafka.

The Castle

When land surveyor K. arrives at a small village that houses a castle, local authorities refuse to allow him to enter. As he tries to convince the officials that they sent for him, they clamp down with increasingly complicated bureaucratic obstacles. This Haneke classic is based on Kafka’s 1926 absurdist novel and has never been screened in Singapore.
