Framemaker Jonathan believes he is dying of leukemia. The unscrupulous American art dealer Tom Ripley arrives on the scene and decides to exploit his illness. He introduces Jonathan to a gangster, who offers to hire the terminally ill man as a professional hit man. As the two spiral into an ever-deepening murder plot, they form an unlikely bond. A cult film today, The American Friend is based on the novel “Ripley’s Game” by Patricia Highsmith and won the German Critics Prize in 1977.
