The sky over war-scarred Berlin is full of trenchcoat-clad angels, who listen to the tortured thoughts of mortals living down below. One angel, Damiel falls in love with Marion, a beautiful trapeze artist, and longs to become mortal himself. Shot mostly in black and white, but blossoming into colour at the most simple yet sublime moments, Wings of Desire is an ode to what it means to be human—for angels and mortals alike. Widely acclaimed, this timeless classic won numerous awards, including Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival; it was also remade into the film City of Angels (1998) starring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan.
