Cheyenne Concepcion

Cheyenne Concepcion is an artist and designer living and working in San Francisco. Her art practice is strongly research oriented and investigates the politics of space through installation, speculation, cartography, and collecting. Drawing on her interest and training in urban design and planning, Concepcion’s work focuses on socio-spatial theory, land development, migration and often has a public component.

In an effort to move away from authoritative representations of space, her research experiments with the redrawing of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands by hybridizing methodologies of conceptual art, new media, and counter-cartography. Concepcion’s project, Borderlands Archive, is a virtual architectural design of a new container for knowledge and narratives about the borderlands. Stepping away from how monuments and maps have historically defined them, she seeks to highlight veritable cultural and material connections by archiving contributed objects from the borderlands.

She is a 2020 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Fellow and in 2019 she was a recipient of the Excellence in Design Award from UC Berkeley. Her work has been shown in galleries and in-situ. Concepcion received her Master’s in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley and Bachelors of Arts in Urban Planning and Policy from UC San Diego. By day, she is a Designer at Spiegel Aihara Workshop in San Francisco’s Dogpatch.
