Hamburg, 1995: Since his nervous breakdown, Karl Schmidt now lives in a supervised shared home with former drug addicts. His predictable-but-dismal daily routine is suddenly interrupted when he encounters an old friend from the past: while Karl tried to get his life under control in Hamburg, his friends became stars of the Berlin techno scene. With their successful record label, they now want to embark on a "Magical Mystery" Tour – and they need a designated driver to accompany them. Karl is quickly persuaded, and so begins an adventurous road trip through 90s Germany, undertaken by a handful of techno freaks and supervised by a mentally unstable ex-artist. What could possibly go wrong?

Written by singer-songwriter Sven Regener of the German band Element of Crime, Magical Mystery’s carefully-selected soundtrack masterfully captures the spirit of the techno-crazy 90s subculture.

Arne Feldhusen was born in 1971 in Rendsburg, Schleswig-Holstein. In the early 1990s, he began working in film as an editing assistant and director’s assistant, as well as a consultant for music use in commercials and television. In 1999, Feldhusen directed a documentary film called Straßenkinder in Deutschland (Street-Kids in Germany) and began directing short films and music videos. Stromberg (2014), a comedy, was his first feature film to be released in cinemas. In 2017, he directed Magical Mystery oder: Die Rückkehr des Karl Schmidt, based on the novel of the same name by musician and screenwriter Sven Regener. Since 2006, Feldhusen has also taught at the Hamburg Media School.
