9:00 AM - 3:30 PM ET

Goethe-Institut Boston

For U.S. German teachers. Eligible for Idioma credit.

This interactive workshop deals with the question of how to design German lessons that are critical of racism and what pitfalls should be considered. Together, we will work out how reflective language can help to recognize and avoid discriminatory structures. Language is power - and language creates reality: using examples and exercises, we will take a critical look at certain terms in German and their possible effects. The aim is to develop an awareness of discrimination-sensitive language and to provide impetus for a sustainable, racism-critical approach in the classroom.

A central question of the workshop will also consider: What image of Germany is conveyed in the German language classroom, and which people and perspectives are included - or not? The workshop invites participants to critically reflect on their own lessons and offers concrete approaches in a practical phase to effectively integrate racism-critical principles into lesson design.

The workshop will be held in German and is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
