VERNISSAGE

Join us and artist Till Nowak on Thursday, February 13th, 2025 from 7-9:30 PM for the opening reception for the exhibition ON THE EDGE.

Till Nowak is known for his interdisciplinary work in fine arts, architectural installations, short films, and contributions to Academy Award-winning feature films. In his work, Nowak critically observes themes of civilization and social polarization. For more than 20 years, he has been experimenting with dimensionality as a metaphor for the relative nature of viewpoints. We share spaces, like the city of Los Angeles, but reality appears different from every person’s perspective.

In this exhibition, the spectator’s standpoint becomes part of the concept: From afar, the large-format prints display calm, floating geometric forms, while up close, the images reveal thousands of individual figures existing in interwoven systems of paths, stairs, or razor-thin planes. These figures are engaged in dreamlike struggles on the edge of stability and imbalance, connection and isolation.

Admission is free.
All ages are welcome.
Light refreshments provided

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Till Nowak was born in Bonn, Germany in 1980 and has lived in Los Angeles/USA since 2015, he works with perspective as a visual metaphor. Using computer-generated images and films, he creates ironic portraits of society and civilization. He exaggerates his observations of human behavior in sometimes bizarre dream worlds that open new perspectives and ways of thinking for the viewer. As a "world builder," Nowak is also a sought-after designer for feature films. He recently worked as a concept artist with Francis Ford Coppola on his new film “Megalopolis” (2024). Previously, he was instrumental in designing the fictional state of “Wakanda” for the film “Black Panther” (2017) and the underwater world in its sequel, as well as the set design for the upcoming film “TRON Ares” (2025), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017), “Midnight Special” (2015), “The Lion King” (2019) and many more.

He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In 2006, the viral success of Nowak's digital artwork "Salad" led to a friendship with the legendary surrealist HR Giger and his agent Leslie Barany, which led to various collaborations. For his short films, Nowak has received numerous awards, including the Golden Lola for the German Short Film Award in 2012 for "The Centrifuge Brain Project," the Young Artists Award of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2007, the "Cinema of Art 2013" award presented by jury president Cindy Sherman, the Grand Prix of the Anima Mundi festival in Brazil in 2015, the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Short Film Award 2006, and over 70 film awards from around the world.
