When we think of costumes in Hau Dong, we often think of bright costumes with colourful patterns. If we think of a hầu đồng or diễn xướng experience as a third space - where different expressions of aesthetics and gender are honoured - then costumes play an important role as one of the first doors to open into this third space. Accordingly, the brilliant costumes not only have aesthetic significance, but also suggest other thoughts about the role of costume in performance, the way we think of costume not as a tool but as a creative potential, and more broadly, the influence of clothing on expressions of identity and how we construct each person's story.

Following the success of the Pride "Colour Palette" workshop, WeCare Social Enterprise and the Goethe-Institut Hanoi are pleased to present "Title" - a workshop to explore personal identity through the experience of choosing and wearing outfits. Design and learn about the traditional costumes of Hau Dong. The experience will be based on the relationship between the LGBTQI+ community, Hau Dong and the experiment of costume design in a cultural and artistic context.

Here, participants will visit and learn about the costumes in Hau Dong and their significance. In particular, they will be invited to take part in a role-playing experience where, under the guidance of the artist, each person will take part in creating and trying on 'pháp phục', which will be tailored in a modern way. From there, the workshop hopes to expand reflection and dialogue on the potential of costume in performance in particular, and in contemporary cultural and artistic life in general.

The programme includes activities:

  • See performances and interact with craftspeople and contemporary artists.
  • Experience 'immersion' by choosing and wearing designer costumes.
Costumes and accessories will be prepared in advance by the organisers. The organisers encourage participants to wear comfortable, easy to move shirts and long trousers to fully participate in the experience.

Note:
The event will include photography and filming. Please inform the organisers in advance if you do not wish your image to appear on social networks and mass media.
