About the Artist

Semsar Siahaan didn’t graduate from the sculpture department at ITB (Bandung Institute for Technology). In 1981, he was expelled from his university after burning a sculpture of one of his lecturers. He regarded the sculpture, Irian dalam Torso (Irian in a Body), as being an exploitation of Papuans. His sensitivity towards social matters and his stridency coloured his career as an artist. Throughout his life, Semsar protested against various forms of injustice and limitations on expression through his works which were experimental, controversial and critical.
