About the Artist

Pacita Abad initially studied law, following in the footsteps of her parents who were politicians. While studying at the University of the Philippines, she was involved in the student movements in Manila and Batanes. The political tension of 1969 encouraged her to become more serious in her study of law, but in the middle of the process, she changed her direction and became and decided to become an artist. Her painting style is replete with decorative patterns, like weaving, which is known as trapunto. Her subjects often included various cultures and grassroots communities.
