Fairy tales and music are closely interwoven with the artistic work of Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981). Both were sources of her driving force. For THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED (IN 1945) she resorted to oriental motifs. After World War II, when she lived in London, she adapted European fairy tales, German ones by the Grimms, French ones by Perrault, those by the Danish fairy tale poet Andersen, and a film like KALIF STORCH shows that she had not forgotten the Thousand and One Nights. She wandered through cultures, letting them stimulate and inspire her to create something entirely new. Her craftsmanship and her ever-present enigmatic comedy keep the fairy tale subjects from slipping into noncommittal sentimentality. Her characters are light, buoyant beings who move with balanced grace and beauty, yet never lose touch with reality. On this DVD, 18 of the surviving titles - some in different versions - are gathered together and edited in the best possible technical quality.
