Drifting To The Rhythms At The Southeast Of Nowhere

Projects 2024 | Round 14

Coproduction partners: Piengrawee Sirisook (Thailand), Baly Nguyễn und Tara Transitory (Germany), Kamila Metwaly (Germany)
A new collaborative work that stems from Nguyễn + Transitory's long-term research into different traditional forms of sound and movement in Thailand and Vietnam where tradition still feels like a non-static living form drifting to the rhythms at the Southeast of Nowhere. In collaboration with Yanisa Buasuk, Gedgaew Eampracha, Apinya Kayee and Siriyakorn Lakul, this work intertwines traditional folk dance and experimental electronic music, tracing how these practices move and are moved, how bodies carry histories, to create and re-create spaces of belonging and unbelonging. The project explores how the past lingers and transforms in the present, highlighting the tension between inherited traditions and new possibilities in contemporary performance practices. Sound is transformed through touch fusing the body with the touch activated scenic interface. The body not only touches the instrument but becomes a conductor, generating compositions in real-time with the fluctuating electrical currents.
