Sketches of the South – Landscapes of Tomorrow
Through massive protests, civil society in Chile succeeded in initiating a transformation process in the country in 2019. Since then, protagonists from the arts and culture have taken an active role in the social discourse on social participation, feminism and climate justice. This bilingual anthology presents a selection of artistic positions and collective practices as well as current debates from different regions of the South American country.
"Perhaps more than ever, it is a matter of taking responsibility for and cultivating collective processes." Alejandra Rojas del Canto, Asamblea textil del Elqui
The ruthless plundering and privatisation of natural resources have left a tangible mark on Chile's landscapes and society. Today, 50 years after the military coup against Salvador Allende's government, the hope for a more just and multi-voiced society is combined with an insistent demand to turn away from the neoliberal model, a legacy of Pinochet's dictatorship. The bilingual volume combines Chilean experiences in exchange with contributions from Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.
"Nature cannot be seen as a basket of goods filled with infinite resources. This is the lesson we are belatedly and dramatically learning through the climate crisis." Maristella Svampa, Buenos Aires
Against this background and based on the experience of the "Estallido", the social revolt, "Chile International II. Sketches of the South - Maps of Tomorrow" presents images, narratives, interviews and essays - discursive and collaborative designs that can show us alternative ways of living together in the future.
