Requirements
Applicants for an internship at the Goethe-Institut in Brussels should meet the following requirements:
- Good computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ongoing university or technical college studies
Cultural Relations Platform:
The Cultural Relations Platform is an EU funded Platform, set up with the overall objective to foster increased role for culture in EU’s external relations through engagement with cultural operators worldwide. It supports the European Union and its institutions (namely the European Commission in Brussels and global EU Delegations) in engaging in meaningful and sustainable cultural relations with partner countries.
Activities of the Platform include:

- To provide support/technical assistance on cultural policy in external relations and international cultural cooperation via studies, mappings, trainings on cultural policy, working meetings with representatives of local cultural operators, etc.;
- To organize yearly training programmes for cultural leaders (the location being in Europe) and regional ad-hoc trainings of similar nature (the location being outside of Europe);
- To support cooperation among cultural and creative sectors via provision of specialised services (participation in book fairs, performing arts markets/ meetings, networking activities, curatorship for events, trainings, organisation of festivals' side events, etc.)
As an intern, you will learn about working in international cultural relations by working with the project team on diverse activities and support the project team members in monitoring results of activities and attending internal and external meetings with partners as well as EU institutions.
Within the framework of the Cultural Relations Platform , interns fulfil the following tasks:
- Supporting the project team in the day-to-day administrative, financial and logistical management of activities;
- Working closely with the financial department on finance-related administrative tasks including following up on payment procedures;
- Supporting the project team members in drafting the reports for the EU institutions;
- Attending to administrative matters required in the mobilisation of short-term experts, including drafting contracts, processing payments related to activities, following up on timesheets, etc.;
- Assisting the preparation of the audit reports for the external auditor;
- Conducting any desk research and other ad-hoc tasks when required.

Cultural Programming
In its cultural programming work, the Goethe-Institut in Brussels arranges encounters between artists and scholars from Germany, Belgium and other European countries for an international and Belgian audience. The cultural programmes organised by the Goethe-Institut with its partners include exhibitions, dance and theatre, film, music and literature/word.Currently, internships in the cultural programming are only possible as part of a compulsory internship.
Within the framework of cultural work, interns fulfil the following tasks:
- Collaboration in the preparation and implementation of cultural events
- Public relations, e.g. editing press releases, invitations and programme information
- Support for artists and speakers
- Translations
- Research work
- Processing external enquiries
- Maintenance of the website of the Goethe-Institut Brussels
- Cooperation with other European cultural institutes in Brussels within the framework of EUNIC
- Assumption of further tasks to be carried out largely independently
- Willingness to carry out routine work
- Good knowledge of English
- Good knowledge of either German, French or Dutch (preferably two or more)
- Good knowledge of the European, Belgium and German cultural scene
- Willingness to do routine work
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Willingness to work independently

A traineeship is only possible in connection with training or studies.
According to Belgian labour law, a distinction must be made between a voluntary and a compulsory internship.
In the case of a compulsory internship, a monthly allowance of € 300 gross is paid, based on the internship allowance of the Federal Foreign Office.
In the case of a voluntary internship, the intern will receive a Belgian work experience contract.
In addition, all students have the opportunity to apply for a short-term scholarship abroad, for example from the European Union or the DAAD or via Erasmus+. The simultaneous granting of a scholarship does not exclude the payment of the allowance.
Persons who do the internship as part of their paid training (e.g. civil service trainees, legal trainees) cannot receive any additional remuneration from the Goethe-Institut abroad either.
Important: Please clarify your health insurance coverage before starting the internship.

Compared to most German cities, Brussels is not a very cheap place to live, but neither is it as expensive as Paris or London, for example. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodation for our interns. However, below you will find some links to websites with practical information about living in Brussels.

Interns at the Goethe-Institut in Brussels are required to write a final report (approx. three pages) at the end of their internship, which serves as the basis for the internship confirmation.
An evaluation of the activity does not usually take place, but can be prepared on request. There is no legal entitlement to an evaluation letter.
