The residency programme is aimed at recognized artists, academics and authors from all disciplines or those working or researching in interdisciplinary fields.
With a standard period of two months, a total of twelve residents per year are invited to work on their research/project development/ideas on the above-mentioned topics on site, and to be enriched by the cultural scene, the city and nature. The nomination and selection process is carried out each year by an international jury
Residencies are a particularly effective format for sustainable encounters and creative (co-)production.
The VILA SUL in Salvador de Bahia/Brazil, which geographically - located on the Black Atlantic -, historically - Brazil's first capital - and culturally - Afro-Brazilian - forms a hub of the South-South dialogue, is the first residency in the "South" within the overall Goethe-Institut network till date.
The residency programme pursues the goal of having international participants look at certain key topics, which are selected for each year, from multiple perspectives, and to enter into an exchange with each other and with local partners. The topics chosen are open enough for participants to develop or pursue their own project ideas.
One focus of the residency is collaboration with the local cultural and art scene. There is no obligation to finalize a project, the outcome is open. Nevertheless, the residents should make themselves available twice during their stay for a public performance with local cooperation partners.
