From Aix-La-Chapelle To Montreal - On Roller Skates!

Rollerdisco + Mini German Courses

As part of MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE

Subconsciously or consciously, have you always wanted to roller-skate in a library? Here's a fantasy that can come true. The Goethe-Institut library will be transformed into a dance floor, where you can roll to the sound of German and international disco hits!

For one evening, during the Nuit blanche, the Goethe-Institut will be transformed into a discotheque. By the way, did you know that 2024 will mark the 65th anniversary of the opening of the world's very first discotheque? Well, it wasn't in New York, but in the small German town of Aachen, a stone's throw from the Netherlands and Belgium. It was in fact in the local Scotch Klub that the orchestra that kept the audience dancing was replaced by a disc jockey. In 1959, DJ Heinrich, a young journalist, played popular records and had his own unconventional way of entertaining the dancing public... much to the delight of the audience. The world's first discotheque was born, and the DJ profession was invented!

So, to commemorate this momentous event in the history of music, entertainment and, why not, humanity, and to underline the fact that any dream or fantasy can become reality, we're inviting the Montreal public on a journey across time and ocean, from Aachen to Montreal: rolling, dancing and having fun. - DJ Heinrich will be proud of us!

Feel free to bring your own roller skates, or we'll lend you some!

70s-style outfits welcome!
