From Casablanca to Dubai, the exhibition NEXT TO HERE presents photographic narratives from young documentary photographers from North Africa and the Middle East. 18 photographic works from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates capture the perspective of a young generation. The works were produced in the context of 10 photography workshops in MENA organized by the Goethe-Institut and its local partners in 2013 and 2014.
The documentary impulse has gained new urgency in the turbulences of today’s world – it reflects a new and strong need to understand what is happening around us. NEXT TO HERE is a selection from a total of 74 photographic works. It introduces visual narratives about the world right at the doorstep - “next to here” and in our time. The works essentially explore human’s changing relationship to nature: By raising questions about ecology, megalopolis, consumer society and ethics, the photographers hit on topics that unite us across countries, languages and cultures. All of the works share a decided interest in the world surrounding us, and in the people who live in it.
The exhibition was first shown in Cairo and has since travelled to Dubai, Khartoum, Amman, Ramallah and other cities of the Arab world. From May 7th NEXT TO HERE will be exhibited at the Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa. The exhibition catalogue in four languages will be available.
