Claire Tolan
Goethe/SPACE Perlin Noise – Sound Art Residency 2015

Sound artist Claire Tolan explored the ways in which we relate to each other online and the shared coping methods used within the context of the ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) community.

During her residency at The White Building, Claire Tolan focused on fusing two aspects of her practice – coding and sound art. Through a range of interventions, both online and physically within the studio, Claire investigated the boundaries between sound art, experimental music and networked performance. It was through consistent openended questioning between these areas that Tolan began developing a mobile platform that uses inputs to generate customised ASMR videos.

She worked with fellow SPACE residency artists Jeremy Hutchison on AGORA_IN_RETE_01, a performative project in their studio which aimed to disrupt the industry standard Open Studio/Private View format. The programme culminated in two collaborative projects for Claire, one with Holly Herndon at Oval Space and SECOND FOUNDATION for which she collaborated with a further two SPACE residency artists, Kimmo Modig and Kei Kreutler alongside others. SECOND FOUNDATION acted as a test ground for Claire to take ASMR into performance and explore its potential for affecting the dynamics of crowds. The Karaoke aspect of the event was a devise used to present the audience with a narrative to gather their voice input and monitor responses.

Claire Tolan is a sound artist, ASMR savant and programmer based in Berlin. Born 1986 in Ohio, USA, Tolan studied Literature at the University of Chicago and Archival Science and Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Michigan. Her practice focuses on exploring human-computer interaction, online communities (intimacy, privacy) and information structures and theory.
