In 17 short stories Judith Hermann looks at interpersonal encounters and relationships. The readers are thrown into the middle of the stories and experience only a tiny fragment of the lives of the protagonists who often wallow in memories, full of longing for what was. A photographer observes his adopted son, an old man remembers a trip to the USA, a woman meets an acquaintance from her youth in a supermarket - the individual stories are brief and concise, reflecting the author's characteristic writing style.
