Using the biographies of three families from 1944 to 1979, Steven Uhly tells the story of the 'Displaced Persons': surviving homeless Jews who had to move from one country to another. SS officer Ranzner, who is stationed in Poland, orders the killing of Jews and abuses his Jewish maid Anna Stirnweiss. The Kramer farming family, who had been resettled from Romania, hides a pregnant Jewish woman and raises her child as their own granddaughter. The novel follows their story of expulsion and the attempt to make a new start.
