Every two years, the V&A and the Goethe-Institut London welcome an artist to their joint residency programme to work with the V&A’s collection investigating a particular theme.

The Goethe V&A Residency takes place in close collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The residency focuses on art and design, such as fashion design, digital design, sound art, animation and photography. The artists work with the V&A’s collection creating a link between the collection and contemporary design. Through workshops, open studios, talks, presentations or masterclasses they engage in the museum’s public participatory programme.

The residency programme addresses artists based in Germany. It includes a fee, a monthly stipend for sustenance, travel expenses within the UK, and production costs as required. The museum offers a studio space at the V&A in South Kensington while the Goethe-Institut invites the artist to stay at the institute’s guest apartment. During their residency the artist will be supported by both teams at V&A and the Goethe-Institut.

This residency programme is part of an ongoing cooperation between the Goethe-Institut London and the V&A. The programme was established in 2016 following a successful collaboration on the V&A’s first ever Digital Design Residency with Berlin-based collective The T/Shirt Issue in 2014. Graphic designer Helmut Völter was the first Goethe V&A artist in residence. His residency culminated an exhibition of his work at the annual London Design Festival. 2018 sees the fashion designer Arianna Nicoletti taking up the Goethe V&A residency. Her residency focuses on sustainable fashion design tying in with the V&A’s Fashioned from Nature exhibition.
