I am Brendan Simms, Professor of the History of European International Relations, and Director of the Centre for Geopolitics in Cambridge.

I spoke at the Goethe-Institut in 2017 on the comparisons between Brexit and the Reformation. I really enjoyed the discussion and meeting Katharina.

In 2037 (the year of the 75th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut London), I will visit the Goethe-Institut London and see how it is marking the 200th anniversary of the end of the Hanoverian connection and accession of Queen Victoria!

There is a 'special relationship' starting with the migration of the Saxons, through the many affinities of religion and dynasty to the nineteenth-century closeness. A lot has happened in the meantime, but I hope a new relationship will be possible post-Brexit.
