Ruth Martin and Ulrike Draesner
Aspiring and experienced translators are invited to a free online workshop on the extract used for the
2022 Goethe-Institut Award for New Translation, from
Ulrike Draesner’s Schwitters. The workshop is supported by the Goethe-Institut London, and will be led by
Ruth Martin.
We will discuss creative strategies for translating difficult texts, before splitting into smaller groups to compare individual approaches to the competition extract in detail. Participants will also get an exclusive look at the author's own unpublished English version of the text.
Ulrike Draesner will join the discussion for the final 30-minute plenary, giving you a chance to ask her questions and learn more about the book.
The workshop is intended to provide a safe and positive environment for discussion and learning. No one will be expected to share their whole translation, or to criticise other people’s work.
Participants will be required to translate the text into English in advance of the workshop.
