A new and innovative children's course

The objective of the course is to provide children and young people with a well-founded look into the world of programming whilst simultaneously teaching German. The course objectives include teaching the basics of programming, the basics of the German language, the use of the systems and block-based development of effective problem-solving strategies.

Through a balanced mixture of thereotical concepts, practical projects, and teaching foundational language, we offer a comprehensive learning experience. The participants have the opportunity to work on real applications in order to consolidate their abilities in a practical setting.

Content and Integrated Learning approach connects learning German with programming. It promotes the acquisition of foreign languages by linking language skills with content.

Why Learn German and Programming at the Same Time?

With this innovative learning offer, Goethe-Institut is responding to early digital development in the MINT area and in doing so, promotes the acquisition of the German language. The sustainable offer of integrated language learning aims to prepare young people for the increasingly global job market or for potential studies in Germany. With Coding & German, children and young people will take their first steps in German as a foreign language using hardware such as the Calliope Mini minicomputer by applying the CLIL approach and at the same time receive basic computer science education.

Calliope Mini

The Calliope mini is a single-board computer developed for educational purposes and used in German primary schools. The Calliope mini is equipped with different components which can be controlled.

Programming Environment

The Open Roberta®Lab is a freely available, graphical programming platform which make learning programming easy. On the open source platform of Roberta® – Learning with Robots initiative from Fraunhofer IAIS, even newcomers can create their first programmes in no time using drag and drop.
