Written in the style of an autobiography, this book by Urs Widmer describes the unfulfilled love of his mother, Clara, and her life-long tale of woe. Clara, a rich young woman, falls in love with Edwin, a music conductor. The relationship between the two is short-lived; Edwin becomes extremely successful and eventually marries another woman. Clara never quite gets over this and her life disintegrates because of her impossible love.
