Friedrich Dürrenmatt wrote theatre plays, short stories, essays and radio plays. He studied philosophy, German and natural sciences in Bern and Zurich. He became known for his crime novels, and achieved international fame thanks to his comedies "Der Besuch der alten Dame" (The Visit; 1956) and "Die Physiker" (The Physicists; 1962). His diverse artistic works were complemented by his own dramatisations, as well as titles such as the film script "Es geschah am helllichten Tag" (It Happened in Broad Daylight). His work received many awards, including the Austrian State Prize for European /literature in 1983. In 1986 Friedrich Dürrenmatt was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize.
