Herta Müller

Herta Müller's family belonged to a German minority in Romania. She studied German and Romanian studies in Timisoara and then worked as a translator in a machine factory. Her refusal to work for the Romanian secret service led to her dismissal and constant threats from the Securitate. Herta Müller's first work Niederungen was published in a censored version in Romania in 1982 and uncensored in Germany in 1984. She emigrated to Germany in 1987. Her extensive literary oeuvre has won many awards. In 2009, her novel Atemschaukel was published and nominated for the German Book Prize. Herta Müller was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009. She draws "landscapes of homelessness by means of condensed poetry and objective prose", according to the Academy's statement in Stockholm. Herta Müller lives in Berlin.
