Currently we are showing a selection of 4 films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder that are from the movement of New German Cinema.

Hermann and Maria Braun get married in 1943. Their marriage lasts only one day and one night before Hermann is called back to the front. After the war he is reported missing. Yet Maria believes he is still alive. Maria becomes the mistress of a GI whom she accidentally kills when Hermann returns unexpectedly. Hermann answers for the killing and goes to jail in her stead. While he is away she makes a successful career in the economic boom of postwar Germany. At the height of her success, Maria, Hermann, their house and worldly goods are destroyed in an explosion.

The Marriage of Maria Braun
by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
1979 | 120 min.| col. | German with English subtitles

The Marriage of Maria Braun
was Fassbinder's first major international cinema success. The idea behind the film first occurred to him at the time of The Merchant of Four Seasons, the first time that Fassbinder had consciously approached the subject of German history, not from the official political angle of course, but in terms of a private history concerned, above all, with stories of individual happiness typical of the period.
