HELD - The Lockdown in Words & Images
Art + Poetry – A Virtual Project presented by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai
Annals of history will not only mark 2020 as a leap year but also - and more significantly, will record the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed on an unsuspecting world that brought in its wake unimaginable and unprecedented changes. Life -as we knew it, came to a complete standstill and the new normal evoked a response in each of us as we learned to adapt to isolation and lockdown.
Held – Lockdown in Words & Images presents the works of four Chennai based poets and visual artists who exchanged ideas and work over email during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Art lends itself easily as a medium for self-expression and interpretation and has been used to convey emotions, communicate thoughts and even record history. Art -in this instance, in addition to providing solace and therapy was also essentially a reflection of how the poets and visual artists were marking time. Gradually they discovered that although their work was different from each other’s in form, style and content, they were able – each one of them, to respond to the creative concerns of the others.
This collaborative Art + Poetry project that includes written and artwork in myriad forms - poetry and prose, photoart, photopoetry, poemages etc., looks to connect in small moments of recognition, to understand not only how and where we are held but also what holds us in these times.
