In this discussion led by Ranjit Hoskote, we will examine the continuing relevance, vitality and contribution of poetry to culture at large in South Asia, across languages. In so doing, it will reflect on the culture of poetry itself – as an imaginative good and a redemptive counterpoint to the attritions of the everyday, as a form of cultural production imbued with its own politics.
It also questions the roles of education, transcultural encounters, the journal, and a critical yet empathetic relationship with the resources of a tradition, in South Asia’s trans-lingual culture of poetry.
