Jan Wagner graduated from high school in the year 1992 after which he studied English Literature at the University of Hamburg, Trinity College, Dublin and Humboldt University, Berlin, where he also completed his Master’s thesis on the younger generation of Anglo-Irish poets. In 1995, along with Thomas Girst, he began editing the international collection of poems, Die Außenseite des Elements. This offset printed ‘Außenseite des Elements’ was a loose leaf collection, which was presented in a box, whereby the reader could independently archive these written letters. This offset printing comprised of contemporary Persian and Dutch poetic themes. The model for Wagner’ project was Marcel Duchamp’s loose leaf collection.
Since the publication of his first volume of poems in 2001, he has been working as a freelance writer, editor and translator from English and American English. His poems were published in numerous anthologies, (among others, Der Große Conrady) and literary magazines (Akzente, BELLA triste, Sinn und Form, Muschelhaufen). As a critic, he wrote reviews for the Frankfurter Rundschau and other newspapers, as well as for radio. He has been a member of the ‚Bayerischen Academy der schönen Künste‘ since 2009 and of the ‚Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur‘, Mainz, ‚Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung‘ in Darmstadt and also the ‚PEN-Zentrums Deutschland‘ since 2010. The volume of poetry, Regentonnenvariationen won the Leipzig Buchmesse Prize (Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse,) in the fiction writing category. It was the first time that this kind of poetic work was given such an award.
Jan Wagner has lived in Berlin since 1995 and in Neukölln, Berlin since 2000.
