Ariyawansa Ranaweera

Ariyawansa Ranaweera, born in 1942, is a prolific poet, translator and a freelance critic from the South of Sri Lanka. He writes in both, Sinhala and English. He is acclaimed for his deft and simple use of language and to bring concepts to life from landscapes considered ordinary. He completed his Bachelors from the Peradeniya University and Masters from the Kelaniya University. He cemented his passion for Literature during his time in Public Service. Ariyawansa has published more than 40 books in Sinhala, out of which 15 are his collections of poetry. He has won the State Literary Award several times for poetry, best poetry translations and translation of prose works. Besides this he has won several other awards for poetry and drama from other notable institutes. Recently he was awarded the D. Lit (Honourary) degree from the Sabaragamuwa National University, in recognition of his contribution to Sinhala Literature.
