Insider Tip: Kunst

The “Insider Tip: Kunst” is entering its fourth round. This time, Kyungwoo Chun's lecture is dedicated to photography in times of digitization and the new forms of artistic expression associated with it. In his talk, Chun examines the works of various artists who address this topic in their works, with a special focus on the artistic practice of the German photographer Beate Gütschow.

In her artworks, Beate Gütschow often plays with reality and the perception of the viewers. Her photographs, which at first glance seem to be documentary landscape shots, reveal themselves as digital collages on a closer look. With the help of digital image processing, the artist constructs alternative scenarios that are sometimes more, sometimes less far removed from reality.

Beate Gütschow (*1970) lives and works between Cologne and Berlin. After studying at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg and at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, her artistic works are represented in numerous international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Kunsthaus Zurich, and the Fotoarsenal Vienna. Beate Gütschow is also a professor of photography at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.

Kyungwoo Chun holds a degree in communication design from the University of Wuppertal and has been active as an artist worldwide since the mid-1990s. His works move between photography and performance, often involving people from different cultures. Chun is also particularly known for his photographic portraits, which usually have a characteristic blur due to long exposure times. He is also a curator and professor of photography at Chung-Ang University Seoul.

The lecture will take place on December 4, 2024, at 7 pm in the auditorium of the Goethe-Institut Seoul and is part of the lecture series “Insider Tip: Kunst”. This interdisciplinary series introduces renowned artists and cultural practitioners from Germany who are lesser known in Korea.

“Insider Tip: Kunst” is organized by the Goethe-Institut Korea in collaboration with Jan Creutzenberg.
