The Goethe-Institut Libanon is introducing AL-MU7AFFIZ, a support fund designed to serve as a catalyst, supporting and expediting the artistic endeavours of artists, collectives, and independent cultural practitioners. This initiative is aiming at providing financial backing, thereby strengthening, and energizing the local arts community.

Project Time-Frame: 19 August to 19 December 2024

AL-MU7AFFIZ offers one-time financial support for the implementation of new or ongoing project, or a small travel grant to empower individuals or groups within Lebanon. This initiative seeks to foster individual and collaborative work processes and artistic research, providing resources to nurture creativity and innovation in the Lebanese cultural scene.

The fund's mission is to provide targeted financial support to sustain Lebanon's cultural sector. This includes funding projects, events, festival participations and initiatives that promote artistic expression, preserve cultural heritage, and encourage innovation. By focusing on immediate support, the fund addresses urgent needs within the cultural community, enabling it to thrive and enrich Lebanon's cultural landscape.

Eligibility

The grant is intended to provide flexible financial support to individuals/collectives who do not have sufficient funds of their own to realise their projects or part of their projects, or to travel to participate or attend training programs in festivals.

Support includes but is not limited to the production of a work, a workshop, a seminar, a podcast/radio project, a text production, the development of a work of research (in the form of a text, an audio, a short film, a book, a small exhibition, etc.) and other forms of artistic work.

Applicant’s and project’s eligibility

Individuals or collectives currently based in Lebanon whose practice falls within one or more of the following disciplines and fields. And:
a. Who either wish to work individually on a project.
b. Or wish to collaborate with an individual or collective based in Lebanon or abroad.
  • Visual Arts (painting, sculpture, graphics, architecture, photography, media-art)
  • Performance Arts (dance, theatre, performance, music)
  • Artists’ moving image
  • Critical and Creative Writing
  • Artistic Research
  • Professional development in the art fields

Applicants must also meet the following criteria:

  • For individual application, person or collective must be based in Lebanon*
  • For joint applications, one of both applicants must be based in Lebanon**
  • Motivation and willingness to pursue an artistic practice individually or in a collaborative way
  • Able to demonstrate that they are committed to the project they are developing
  • Must have already completed artistic work in the sought field (2-year experience)
  • Willingness to report, document and present the project once ended and to provide written evidence of how the support fund was used.

Project proposals must meet the following criteria:

  • The proposal must have a clear outcome (whether practical or theoretical)
  • The proposed project must be feasible within five months of the deadline for submission
* one entity – could be a person, or a collective
** two entities – could be a person and a collective, two collectives or two individuals.
Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefited from Goethe-Institut-Libanon’s programmes or funding in the cultural field.

Benefits

The financial support ranges from 500.- to 5000.- USD.
Disbursement in one instalment and for a project that can span a maximum period of 5 months (August to December 2024).

The type of application, whether individual or joint, does not play a role in the amount of funding granted, rather the nature of the project and its content.

Please send the following documents:

In the case of a joint application with a person based abroad, the application form must be submitted by the person or entity based in Lebanon, and the required information and documents should be submitted for both parties.
  • CV (for joint applications and collectives: please submit a CV for each person participating in the project)
  • Portfolio or work references (e.g., links to recordings, videos and other online presentations of works): qualifications and previous activities/projects performed in the last 2 years as evidence of work in the field sought (for joint applications and collectives: please submit a document for each person participating in the project, and, if available, for the collective itself)
  • Motivation Letter: including a brief description of the current work status against the backdrop of the present situation in Lebanon
  • Project proposal, including budget and time schedule

The documents should be in PDF format and must not exceed 10 MB/document. Documents are only accepted in English languages.
 

For joint applications and collectives only:

Please add an authorization letter (in English) assigning one person to represent the team in all legal matters (e.g. concluding the agreement with the Goethe-Institut Libanon) and to receive the fund on behalf of the team, which also states that the grant amount will be distributed among the different actors of the project. This statement needs to be signed by all applicants on a printed paper and attached as a scanned copy. Digital signatures will NOT be accepted.

The Goethe-Institut reserves the right to suspend the grant award and require reimbursement upon realising fraud or infringement in any of the submitted documents.
