PANEL 2: CULTIVATE CULTURES IN PUBLIC SPACES

This panel will explore how performing arts in public spaces influence the relationship between the citizens and the city.  How having performing arts in public spaces help people visualize their cities and their geographical existence in a different way and trigger their imagination, thoughts, and feelings towards the city they live in. Amal Kaawash will share her experience as a songwriter and vocalist and one of the “Nohye Al Ard” team, where group of group of individuals and initiatives in Saida  founded a garden in Saida aiming to enforce participatory ecological farming. The garden also hosted several performing arts events which the speaker will talk about.

Amal Kaawash is a community artist whose interests span songwriting, singing, and cultural journalism. Amal’s artistic practice extends to exploring narratives through verbal storytelling, music, and visual arts. She is known for her cartoon character Meiroun, which carries that name of her family village in Palestine that was ethnically cleansed in 1948. As a singer, her interests include Arabic musical folklore, mostly from the Levantine region and Palestine in particular. Amal is also an active member of Nohye Al Ard community garden for agroecology; an initiative that aims at raising awareness about the importance of re-connecting with nature and our need for green spaces within our cities. She also is coordinating artistic and cultural events within the space of the garden.
