Space Forum 2023

The Art/Space Negotiations is a project initiated by Goethe-Institut Nigeria to open a new line of interrogations and discussions on space availability and utilization for independent art in Lagos. The series probes the physical, digital, and metaphysical depths of these negotiations and seeks a lively interrogation of this question: In a vast land occupied by oil and gas, banking and finance, and manufacturing and real estate concerns, how have art entrepreneurs and artists negotiated for space?

Space Forum 2023 commences with a one-day workshop designed for architects, curators, artists, cultural workers and students in these fields. It focuses on exploring the alternative architectural practices for independent art spaces, encompassing both material and immaterial methodologies. The workshop also understudies the significant role of independent art spaces in community building.

The conversation sessions begin with a line-up of experienced art entrepreneurs, cultural producers, artists and architects. The first discussion examines the historical evolution of independent art spaces in Lagos from the post-colonial era to the present day, with panelists Mallam Mudi Yahaya and Jumoke Sanwo.

The second day of the forum initiates a conversation between Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh and Dolapo Osunsina, exploring the idea of creating spaces for independent art as a curatorial practice and addressing the roles involved in identifying and negotiating these spaces.

Finally, the forum hosts Bayo Omoboriowo, who shares insights on the negotiation demands of his new art space, MAAD House. The conversation is moderated by the photographer and artist Logor Olumuyiwa.

Space Forum 2023 concludes with a networking session for all participants. Join us on this enlightening journey; it promises to be a rewarding experience.
