Back to the Future! Teaching German after the Pandemic

Under the motto “Back to the Future - Teaching German after the Pandemic”, DLT 2023 took place on May 12 and 13 at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City, Metro Manila.

Teaching and learning are now different than before, the pandemic has left its mark: learning losses and psychological problems on the one hand, countless new digital tools, and teaching methods on the other. Teachers and learners first must learn how to deal with each other again – action orientation takes on a new meaning in this context. Now should be time to think: about pedagogy, modalities and structure. The 5th DLT paid particular attention to this new challenge, while again offering a range of content-related continuing education topics, considering both school lessons and professional training.

Day 1: Friday, May 12, 2023
Parallel workshops took place from 14:00 to 16:00. The first workshop was entitled “More than just a role play - scenario-based learning in subject-specific lessons” and was led by Hannilette Diola from the Goethe-Institut. The second workshop entitled “Wie bitte? Exercises in phonetics” was conducted by Esther Sirigar, also from the Goethe-Institut. In the third workshop, which dealt with “Action- and communication-oriented teaching”, the participants were supervised by Elis Choi, Christoph Felberbauer, Volker Schlieske and Demet Üngör from the German European School Manila.

The publishers' fair and poster presentations began at 4 p.m., giving participants the opportunity to get to know various publishers and their products and to find out about the latest materials and methods. The opening event at Balay Kalinaw started at 17:00 and was the highlight of the day. From 19:00, a networking dinner was held in the garden of the UP Hotel, where participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas and network in a relaxed atmosphere.

Day 2: Saturday, May 13, 2023
The day began at 9:00 a.m. with a guided tour of the campus, during which participants were able to explore the various facilities and rooms of the university. This was followed by the publishers' fair and poster presentations from 10:30 to 11:30, where participants had the opportunity to find out about new teaching materials and projects. At 11:30 am, everyone met for lunch, which lasted until 1:00 pm.

From 13:30 to 15:30, various workshops were offered in parallel. The first workshop entitled “Content before form - meaningful content in subject-specific lessons” was led by Hannilette Diola from the Goethe-Institut. The second workshop dealt with “Intercultural sensitivity: How we and our learners can develop a non-judgmental attitude” and was offered by Narisa Dumrongvaree, also from the Goethe-Institut. In the third workshop, “Practical Vocabulary Projects for the Real Today and Tomorrow,” Lisa Paz from the University of the Philippines Diliman led the participants through hands-on projects.

At 3:30 p.m., the final discussion took place, during which the participants reflected on their experiences and insights of the day. The certificates were then awarded and the event officially ended.
