From May 17-18, 2024, the DLT conference brought Filipino German teachers together for nine workshops on language teaching trends, including AI in regional studies and gesture-based learning. Networking remained key, with publisher exhibitions and a Friday dinner.

German as a Foreign Language Today – Trends, Tools, and Techniques

The 2024 DLT Conference, held at the German European School Manila (GESM) on May 17-18, 2024, brought together German language educators for two days of workshops, networking, and professional development.

Day 1: Friday, May 17
The event began with registration and a welcome address by GESM principal Christoph-Boris Frank and the organizing team. Attendees then enjoyed a theatrical performance, “Queen of Colors”, followed by a school tour and arts exhibition.

The publishers' fair featured Cornelsen, Ernst Klett Sprachen, Hueber, Piefke Trading, and the Goethe-Institut, showcasing the latest language-learning resources and exam information. After lunch, participants attended three parallel workshops on:
  • Gesture-based learning in German instruction.
  • Incorporating intercultural aspects in the classroom.
  • Grammar challenges for beginners (articles and prepositions).
The day concluded with an opening event and networking dinner in the GESM Garden, providing a relaxed setting for educators to connect.

Day 2: Saturday, May 18
The second day started with publisher-led workshops, covering:
  • Cultural misunderstandings and AI in language teaching.
  • Using films and digital resources for effective learning.
  • German for nursing professionals (online workshop).
After another visit to the publishers' fair and lunch, the afternoon featured three more workshops, focusing on:
  • Vocabulary training through active learning.
  • AI applications in German language instruction.
  • Phonetics through games and movement.
The conference concluded with closing remarks and a certificate ceremony, led by Jens Hericks from the Goethe-Institut Philippinen.

This year’s DLT successfully combined cutting-edge teaching strategies, cultural insights, and digital innovations, reinforcing professional connections and enhancing German language education in the region.
