The project »The Border« explores and contemplates widely different kinds of borders and their demarcation – be they cultural, social, geographical, linguistic, personal, or philosophical. Reflected in the exhibition from an artistic point of view, discursive accompanying programs – so-called academies – extend and probe the topic more fully at each exhibition venue and also emphasize respective local features: in Moscow, for example, the focus was upon the border between Europe and Asia; in St Petersburg it was (worker) migration at the heart of the discussion; the circle in Krasnoyarsk was preoccupied with the border as a »frontier«, whereas in Kiev, different notions and myths about Europe played a central role; in Tiflis, the focus was upon »fluid borders« and surreptitious land grabbing. This online publication takes up, develops and supplements the debate. It is aimed at presenting the greatest possible bandwidth of perspectives – in their various roles as philosophers, cultural theorists, historians, and activists, the individual authors from a variety of disciplines home in on the topic of borders. The views expressed in the texts do not always coincide with the view of the Goethe Institute. Nevertheless, we believe it is important to create a framework for an unfettered, respectful exchange of opinions – and this exchange also benefits from controversy.
