MASTERCLASS
CURATING DESIGN
The MasterClass by Matylda Krzykowski will give insight into curating, with a focus on curating contemporary design.
What are physical and digital formats which mediate stories about design?
Museums, the traditional domain of curating, are places with limitations for the design discourse. There is a growing amount of experimental venues, gallery spaces, biennials and triennials. This liberality has created a new kind of institutionalisation. Meanwhile curation is shifting more and more from being a cultural and academic practice to a social process involving visitors and civilians online and offline. Exhibitions have always played a significant role in defining disciplinary histories, but since the digital world has become more important in recent times, making the curated material more accessible to people all over the globe, the physical world is not the only means of presentation anymore. There are new forms and formats arising, offering progressive speculations and concepts. Matylda Krzykowski is an expert in developing these formats for cultural and commercial clients. Her practice views design as a holistic and transdisciplinary practice somewhere between analogue and digital realities, in which the exhibition aims to dissolve the classic distinction between subject and object.
Join the class to learn about exhibition making as an expanded visual and social practice and the possibilities it offers for you and your work!

WORKSHOP
HOW DO YOU WANT TO WORK?
The 3-day Workshop by Matylda Krzykowski was first conducted in 2019 at University of Applied Arts Vienna, in the Industrial Design Department headed by German designer Stefan Diez. Focusing on the theme ‘Work’, Krzykowski was invited to start the semester. The question ‘How do you want to work?’ aimed to challenge the students to question existing work conditions and design spatial configurations in a model in which they imagine to work in. Their ideas addressed the current conditions of the work environment, such as creativity, adaptability and flexibility, and the related technological, economic, psychological and social challenges. The workshop became the basis for the projects the students developed, which were presented at the Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne in an exhibition titled ‘Workspace in Progress’.
In the first edition of Saudi Design Festival Matylda Krzykowski will run the same workshop with students and interested civilians from all ages from Riyadh and beyond. The workshop starts with an introduction to the theme ‘Work’, while the main focus will be the production of a detailed work environment, abstract or concrete, in a 40 x 40 x 40 cardboard model. On the final day, discussions, presentations and documentation will take place. The question about the spaces we need to earn our income in, and how we want to invest our time, is recurring. More importantly, will it be activities that we want to pursue?
