What is the difference between an online training and an online course?

Our Deutsch Training Online is an online offer for independent learning. The focus is on repetition, practice and learning the German language according to the Common European Framework of Reference between A1 and C1. This offer is without a teacher, which is why, in contrast to our online courses, the qualitative learning success cannot be certified. If you would like individual support from a tutor during the course, we recommend booking individual one-to-one sessions ( 1x German Online Live , 5x German Online Live ).

Which language levels are currently available in Deutsch Training Online?

Deutsch Training Online is currently available on levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. We regret that it is not available at level C2. Book Deutsch Training Online here

I don't know my level. How do I know which Deutsch Training Online level is right for me?

If you don't know your level or you're unsure which level is appropriate for you, you can take a free placement test online. To do this, follow the booking process for the course in the webshop. When choosing your language level, instead of entering your German level, you can also request a placement test. Depending on the test result, the appropriate Deutsch Online Training level will be activated for you (A1, A2, B1, B2 or C1).

Do I need prior knowledge of German to take part in Deutsch Training Online?

To take part in Deutsch Training Online at level A1, you do not need any prior knowledge of German. From level A2 you need the skills and knowledge of the previous language level. Book Deutsch Training Online here

What is the difference between Deutsch Training Online and an Online Group Course or Online Individual Course?

In contrast to our online courses for individuals or groups, learners in Deutsch Training Online work independently without a teacher. The training is designed for users to work through the material easily with no outside help. In case of questions, however, the user-friendly infoboxes provide helpful hints and answers. In addition, Deutsch Training Online focuses on listening, reading and writing. It does not include specific speaking exercises. Can I also start my Deutsch Training Online course at a later point in time?

No, from the time of activation, you have three month’s access to the learning platform so you should start the course immediately. Unfortunately there is no extension of the course possible.

One hour after booking, I have not yet received an email notification that my Deutsch Training Online has been activated. What can I do?

First, please check your spam email inbox. Sometimes our emails end up here. If you cannot find a notification here either, please log in to MEIN GOETHE.DE with your Goethe-ID and see whether your Deutsch Training Online appears under "MEINE KURSE UND PRÜFUNGEN". If your training appears here, you can start learning German straight away. If your training should not appear here either, you will have to be patient. In exceptional cases it can take up to 24 hours for your Deutsch Training Online to be activated. If your Deutsch Training Online is still not activated 24 hours after booking, please contact germancourses-usa@goethe.de

Can Deutsch Online Training also be booked for minors?

Yes, Deutsch Online Training can also be booked for young people aged 16 or over. For further information, please contact our customer service at germancourses-usa@goethe.de

Can I continue in an online group or online individual course after completing Deutsch Training Online?

Yes, after completing Deutsch Training Online you can continue learning German in an online class. The right online course for you will be identified in an placement test. We cannot guarantee a direct transition from a Deutsch Training Online level to the next level in an online course because the online training is not presented by a teacher. Can I continue with a tutored online course after the Deutsch Online Training?

Yes, after completing the Deutsch Online Training you can continue with a tutored online course (in a group or individually). A direct transition from Deutsch Training Online to the next level of a tutored online course is not possible, as your training is not supervised by a teacher. Can I get a confirmation of my training progress?

Yes, within your three-month access period from the day of booking, you can independently download a daily confirmation of your training progress in the online course room in the "Course" tab (bottom left). After expiration of the access period, a manual issuance is unfortunately no longer possible. There will be no certificate of participation for the Deutsch Training Online .

Why does the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles/Munich appear in connection with the Deutsch Training Online? Do I have to go to the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles/Munich for the training?

No, you don't have to go to Los Angeles/Munich. Deutsch Training Online is an online course that you can take from the comfort of your home. The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles/Munich administers the Deutsch Training Online and therefore appears in this context.

Registration

When booking online, you must register with us. Please make a note of your Goethe ID (consisting of your email address and password).
The course is created

The course is created once you complete the booking process.
As soon as your course is activated, you will receive a notification by email. You now have three month’s access to the learning platform.
Start of the course

At the top right of the screen you will find the tab "MEIN GOETHE.DE – SIGN IN". Enter the same e-mail address and password that you used when booking.

Under "My courses and exams" you will find your German Online Training.

How the course works

German Online Training is an online course to help you learn German independently. This course will enable you to move up an entire language level.

Learn German independently
The training is divided into chapters that cover current and everyday topics and teach you the vocabulary and grammar you need to understand them.
You'll learn German without a teacher and practice independently with a wide range of exercises, e.g. videos, images, audio files, reading texts and cloze texts. The German Online Training focuses on listening and reading skills. You'll practice your writing skills with cloze exercises but you won't specifically practice your speaking skills.

Placement test to determine your language level
If you're not sure what level of German you have, you can complete our free placement test.
Select a placement test instead of a level during the booking process. The appropriate German Online Training level (A1, A2, B1, B2 or C1) is then unlocked depending on your score.
