Zweig is at the height of his success, when the Nazi's rise to power forces him into exile. He is one of the most read German-language writers of his time, but his books are banned in Germany and later in Austria. As a Jewish intellectual, Zweig struggles to find the right stance towards the events in Nazi Germany, while searching for a home in the new world. Despite the warm acceptance and an overwhelmingly beautiful tropical setting, Zweig remains uneasy and restless while traveling from Buenos Aires to New York and Brazil. The new countries can’t replace his true home and can’t help him to find peace.
This is the story of a refugee, of the loss of the old and the search for a new home and of a time when all of Europe was fleeing.
