Award-winning writers Damon Galgut and Navid Kermani will be in conversation at the Goethe-Institut on 13 April 2024.

Burden of the Past – Navid Kermani & Damon Galgut in conversation

“Burden of the Past” brings the two award-winning writers Damon Galgut and Navid Kermani into conversation at the Goethe-Institut South Africa on Saturday, 13 April 2024 at 4:00 PM. Facilitated by esteemed journalist, radio presenter and writer Karabo Kgoleng, the two authors will present excerpts from their renowned books “Along the Trenches – A journey through Eastern Europe to Isfahan” (Kermani) and “The Promise” (Galgut), followed by a conversation about the controversial topics of colonialism, life in (post-)Apartheid and the comparability or incomparability of the Holocaust, linking their literary work to the most current and pressing political questions.

About the Authors:

South African author Damon Galgut has published nine books since his first one appeared in 1981. He has been shortlisted three times for The Booker Prize and won it in 2021 for his latest novel, The Promise.

Navid Kermani is a German writer and orientalist. He is the author of several novels, travelogues as well as books and essays on literature and religion. He has won numerous prizes for his literary and academic work, including the Peace Prize of the German Publishers' Association in 2015, the most prestigious literary award in Germany.

Karabo Kgoleng is a recipient of the South African Literary Award for Journalism and is a sought-after speaker on storytelling as central to public intellectual and cultural life. She believes that engagement in social and cultural issues contributes significantly to the transformation of individuals and society. Kgoleng has also worked as Books Editor for City Press and as talk show host at SAfm and 702.
