Matri-archi(tecture) presents IN-FORM-ALL

Counterpublics are alternative ways of making space in cities that non-architects organise in informal ways. The project centres these counterpublics as part of spatial discourse reframing informality beyond the dominant narratives that suggest it as being chaotic, dirty, dark and disorganised. We do this by demonstrating a process of making a counterpublic platform through a set of collaborations. All of the images on IN-FORM-ALL are taken by and in dialogue with local practitioners embedded in their cities, constructing and nurturing counterpublics.

IN-FORM-ALL is a connector and a reference point. On the one hand, we invite and prompt contributors to work with us in understanding counterpublics, connecting spatial storytellers in and across cities. On the other hand, as an archive, we strive to unsettle notions of informality within spatial discourse, serving as a reference point for spatial practitioners who are concerned with and working in these cities.

The launch of the IN-FORM-ALL invites a gathering of voices within Johannesburg’s counterpublics and beyond, to learn about alternative economies and creative practices that are considered informal. The launch is an opportunity to experience the archive in space, to network and to celebrate.
