Poupeh Missaghi’s debut novel was published in 2020 - eleven years after the 2009 election. trans(re)lating house one is an experimental novel, a text-based artwork that is shaped by bringing the body, mourning, displacement, translation, memory, dreams, and theory together. 

Join us for a reading night with the author. Missaghi will read excerpts from the book and will be in a conversation with the artist and writer Mandana Mansouri. This conversation will be focused on writing in a time of crisis; what does it mean to write when one is witnessing and experiencing violence everyday and what are possible ethical ways of writing?

Poupeh Missaghi is an Assistant Professor in Literary Arts and Studies at the English Department of the University of Denver. She is a creative writer, scholar, editor, and translator (between English and Persian). Her debut novel trans(re)lating house one was published in 2020 (Coffee House Press) and her translation of Nasim Marashi’s novel I’ll Be Strong for You in 2021 (Astra House). Her second book Sound Museum is forthcoming in 2024 (Coffee House Press). She has a PhD in English and Literary Arts from the University of Denver. She teaches at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and Pacific Northwest College of Arts, Portland, OR, as well as Catapult, NY, and Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Denver.

Mandana Mansouri is a displaced Kurdish artist and writer. Her exile started long before moving anywhere. She started forgetting her mother tongue when she went to school in 1988. Now she is remembering. As a physical being, she is an uninvited guest on the stolen land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ First Nations. In her mind, she is dancing with her people in front of a fire.
