“The deep calm, serenity emanating from the soundscapes of natural places, exists all around us, even though its survival is threatened by having to coexist with a frantically busy city under constant change and construction.”
Behind the Scenes
The last winter
Anomie is the rebellious alter ego emerging from the studio of Sofie Loizou. As she emblazons her unique style across the dancefloors of today, she’s shaping the sonic pathways towards a politically conscious modality. A former Red Bull Music Academy participant, she has releases under many pseudonyms over her decades-long career during which she has performed alongside electronic maestros like Space Invadas, Martyn, Emika, DJ Vadim, Flying Lotus and Kode9.
Recorded with a specially designed and “divined” microphone stick, the film focuses conceptually on the dynamic struggle between the diverse and “at-risk” environments and cultures of Sydney, a frantically busy city heaving with the sounds of constant change and construction.
From the sounds of machinery, to the rushing of crystal-clear streams, Sydney is a sonic mosaic, complex and full of contradictions. I’m aiming to share this juxtaposition through sound and vision, and the Behind the Scenes video follows me around with my divining stick as I capture the city I was born in from a deeply personal perspective. To exemplify these two faces of Sydney life, I’ve used found sound rhythms, fast-paced editing and time-lapse, contrasted with stretched out pedal tones counterpointing dramatically orchestrated sounds of the bushland environment.
