Behind the Scenes
Flow State
Escuri is a sound artist from the Philippines. His sonic works involve experimentation with various musical genres mixed with field recording soundscapes. He has been actively performing electronic music locally and internationally. Notable musical projects involve performing and producing electronic music in various settings, whether public or private space, as an attempt to explore how physical spaces contribute to and/or affect sound and performance.
For Sound of City, Escuri produced a visual and sound-driven work that reflects animations happening in daily commuting life. The work explores the impact of architecture, urban environment and soundscape quality of Metro Manila as perceived by the artist through observation, sound walk and space intervention.
In the process, the artist went to different places in Metro Manila, experienced different modes of transportation and sound walk within the vicinity. There, Escuri recorded environmental sounds, analysed the cities’ rhythms, and also produced snippets of melodies and beats using a handheld synthesiser.

Urban scape, especially in this modern age, can be seen to play an important role in infusing rhythms physically and musically within our everyday lives. The composition of our urban form and the activities it houses dictates when and where we must be. In addition, the organisation of our public transport infrastructure, its frequencies and services, determines how we get there and how long it takes. For Sound of City, Escuri produced a visual and sound-driven work that reflects animations happening in daily commuting life.
