A participatory Workshop to collectively think how to make the Goethe-Institut in Brussels more sustainable
Sustainability requires global social change. Only through the exchange of different experiences, only through dialogue between cultures, can we learn from each other and shape change. Art, culture, education and language open up new perspectives on sustainability and provide impetus for society, politics and the economy.
What do you expect from cultural institutions when it comes to sustainability? How should they integrate sustainable practices in their work? What concrete steps would you like the Goethe-Institut in Brussels to take?
We are pleased to invite you to our Sustainability Lab on 16 November 2024 at the Goethe-Institut Brussels. On this afternoon, we would like to develop ‘micro-missions’ together with you to make our institute more sustainable. Your ideas and commitment are needed!

A worldwide network for sustainability
The Goethe-Institut regards itself as an important partner in the transition towards a sustainable future: with 151 institutes in 98 countries and our international partner network, we address a wide range of issues and approaches to sustainability. We facilitate encounters between people from different backgrounds and cultures. In close cooperation with civil society and the local cultural scene, we support the further development of local and global solutions. In all of this, we are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In doing so, we not only make sustainability ‘an issue’, but also align our own actions with it. Take the climate, for example: our goal is to become climate-neutral in Germany by 2030 and to reduce our international carbon footprint by at least a third compared to 2019 - initially in the areas of mobility, climate-friendly buildings and resource-saving events and digital activities. In 2022, we prepared our first sustainability report as an overall institution in accordance with the standard of the German Sustainability Code (DNK). We regularly review developments and the achievement of the targets we have set. We aim to improve at all levels - ecological, social and economic - every year.
