The Goethe-Institut Ottawa's monthly thematic film series on German cinema at Saint Paul University (223 Main St, Amphiteatre):

Adventures big and small

It's going to be adventurous - literally and figuratively! The film program in winter and spring 2023 invites us into foreign and long gone times, takes us on great journeys and discovery tours, opens up new worlds of life and love, carries us off into the distance and sometimes just into the adjacent tree house.

Leander Haußmann's classic of Ostalgie and amusing historical oblivion, Sun Alley (Sonnenallee) makes the beginning here, and takes us to the East Berlin of the GDR times - to the shorter end of the Sonnenallee, to be exact -, to Micha and his friends and their adventurous cat and mouse game with the local ABV (Abschnittsbevollmächtigter) about illegally imported records from the West. February is Valentine's Day and Tom Tykwer's 3 (Drei) takes us to Berlin in the 2010s and into the big-city love adventure of Hanna, Simon and the handsome Adam. In Percy Adlon's Bagdad Cafe (Out of Rosenheim), Jasmin Münchgstettner, a native of Rosenheim, Bavaria, must assert herself in the middle of the U.S. Mojave Desert against the frustrated, angry Brenda and her clique of outsiders. In The Ascent of Chimborazo (Die Besteigung des Chimborazo), Rainer Simon invites us on an associative journey to Ecuador up to what was then the highest peak in the world with one of the great adventurers and explorers in German history, Alexander von Humboldt. Valeska Grisebach's Western follows an adventurous group of German construction workers to Bulgaria. Shot only with amateur actors, the film provides us with a haunting study of masculinities. Joya Thome opens the summer with Queen of Niendorf (Königin von Niendorf). In her film, her protagonist Lea takes us into a world of never-ending summer breaks, where every corner, the fields, meadows, tree houses and rafts call for fun and adventure.

All films presented with English subtitles.
